Ashley [Shy] Weeks
ACMG Rock Guide, Wilderness First Responder, Route Developer, Cave Rescue Responder
With 16 years of work experience in the climbing and outdoor adventure sports industry and 6 years of additional teaching and coaching experience, Shy brings a wealth of knowledge to the climbing community. Shy first started her instructional career as a swimming and First Aid & CPR instructor, then found a love of outdoor adventure sports and began guiding and teaching a wide variety of outdoor pursuits such as climbing, backpacking, caving, canoeing, orienteering, wilderness survival, and outdoor leadership courses.
From 2011-2019 Shy was the Climbing Programs Coordinator and Head Route Setter for the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre and in this role she fostered an inclusive environment and built a dedicated team of instructors, guides and route setters. Shy also helped support the campus bouldering & climbing communities by advocating for facility upgrades, user safety, and hosting climbing community-focused events such as Old man Pete’s bouldering competition.
In March 2020 Shy started Vertical Horizons Guiding to offer instructional climbing and outdoor skills programs in Kananaskis and the Bow Valley. Most recently Shy worked internationally as a Guide and Route Developer with Cat Ba Climbing in Vietnam. There she guided Deep Water Solo, both single pitch and multi pitch Rock climbing programs, as well as established new sport and trad climbing routes.
Lindsey Wallis
ACMG TRCI, CWI, Route Setter
Lindsey has a strong presence in the Calgary climbing community teaching, route setting, and guiding for several different gyms and guiding companies. Formally trained as a musician, Lindsey’s instructional experience started with teaching music lessons over 20 years ago and she has now been instructing climbing for over 9 years. As an outdoor enthusiast and Mom, Lindsey has valuable experience and knowledge with creating a fun and positive outdoor experience for kids.
Pieter van Staalduinen
ACMG TRCI & CGI, Autism Climbs certified instructor, B.Ed
Pieter is an enthusiastic climber and teacher who came to rock climbing after teaching high ropes programs for Camp Horizon. He has now been coaching and climbing for 8 years, and excels at technical rope systems and adaptive programming. In 2018 Pieter completed a Bachelor of Education from Mount Royal University and is now a teacher in the Calgary area. Pieter’s favourite type of climbing terrain is technical slab, which he knows makes him unusual!
